Secret 28/59: Quantify Difficult and Lengthy Information
One major problem students face is handling difficult and lengthy
information.
When information is long, complicated, or filled with details, the brain
feels overwhelmed. The real problem is not the difficulty, but it is the
absence of quantification.
What does “quantify” mean?
It means: Convert information into numbers.
If you are reading three pages, ask yourself:
- How
many concepts are there in these three pages?
- How
many diagrams are there?
- How
many steps are involved?
- How
many subtopics are there?
Do not say, “This is too much.”
Instead ask:
- Exactly
how much is there?
Why Quantification Works
The brain handles numbers better than vague impressions.
If you say:
“This chapter is huge.”
Your brain feels fear.
If you say:
“This chapter has 12 concepts.”
Now the brain has a clear boundary.
Example 1 – Social Studies
Instead of saying:
“I have to study history.”
Ask:
- How
many kings are there?
- How
many dynasties?
- How
many treaties?
- How
many events?
Suppose:
- In
8th standard you studied 20 kings.
- In
9th standard you studied 14 kings.
- In
10th standard you have to study only 10 kings.
Now it becomes measurable and manageable.
Without counting, it feels infinite.
With counting, it becomes finite.
Example 2 – Biology /
Medicine
If a chapter has:
- 7
diagrams
- 12
definitions
- 5
processes
Count them.
Then you know:
“I have to remember 7 + 12 + 5 = 24 units.”
That is manageable.
Example 3 – Software
Programming
When studying a programming language like Java:
- How
many keywords?
- How
many major concepts?
- How
many steps in this algorithm?
Sometimes students feel:
“There are 50–70 things!”
But they never count.
The moment you count, your fear reduces.
Why Students Struggle
Students usually:
- Read
without counting
- Memorize
without structure
- Feel
overwhelmed without measurement
They never ask:
“How much exactly?”
The Principle
If information is:
✔
Difficult → Quantify it
✔ Lengthy
→ Quantify it
✔
Technical → Quantify it
✔ Detailed
→ Quantify it
When you quantify:
- You
know how much to store.
- You
know how much to retrieve.
- You
know how much is left.
- You
know when you have completed it.
Final Insight
Uncounted information feels endless.
Counted information feels conquerable.
Before studying anything difficult, ask:
How many units are there?
That is Secret 28 of the 59 Secrets to Studying.
