Secret 52/59: Correct Study Posture to Improve Focus
Concentration is not only a mental activity.
It is also a physical state of the body.
Your posture while studying plays an important role in maintaining
attention.
Sit with a Straight Back
While studying, sit with your back straight.
This stabilizes your centre of gravity and helps maintain
alertness.
Slouching or bending excessively makes the body uncomfortable and
reduces alertness.
Do Not Hold the Book in
Your Hand
Do not hold the book continuously in your hand.
The hand will become fatigued after some time.
Instead, keep the book on the table or desk.
Position it so that your line of sight is roughly 45 degrees downward.
This helps reduce strain on the eyes when studying for longer periods.
Maintain Proper Posture
While Writing
While writing:
- Sit
upright
- Keep
the notebook on the table
- Avoid
bending too much
Good posture allows the body to remain relaxed and stable.
Avoid Physical Discomfort
Aches or pains in the body disturb concentration.
When the body experiences discomfort, it sends more blood and oxygen to
the affected area.
This diverts physiological resources away from the brain.
As a result, concentration decreases.
Reduce Body Noise
Concentration improves when body noise is minimized.
Body noise includes:
- Physical
discomfort
- Fatigue
- Poor
posture
- Muscle
strain
Reducing body noise helps the brain focus on the task.
Mental Noise vs Body Noise
Concentration depends on reducing two kinds of noise:
- Body
noise – physical discomfort
- Mental
noise – unnecessary thoughts
Once both are reduced, attention becomes stable.
This idea is discussed further in my e-book:
“Crack Any Exam with E = MC².”
Psychological
Characteristics of Attention
When concentration develops, several changes occur:
Postural Response
The body automatically adjusts posture to remain alert.
Clearness in Consciousness
The object of attention becomes clear in the mind.
Orienting Reflex
The brain prepares itself for action and focus.
Physiological Correlates of
Attention
Attention also produces physiological changes in the body:
- Increased
blood flow to the brain
- Constriction
of peripheral blood vessels
- Changes
in EEG activity
- Changes
in heart rate and respiration
These changes support sustained mental activity.
Final Message
Good posture supports good concentration.
Reduce body noise.
Sit properly.
Let the mind focus fully on learning.
