Time Required: 10–15 Minutes
Purpose
Every stressful situation begins with a conversation inside the mind.
Some conversations produce understanding.
Others produce unnecessary stress.
The purpose of this worksheet is to help you become aware of your thinking before your thoughts become your stress.
This is not an exercise in positive thinking.
It is an exercise in productive thinking.
STEP 1
What Happened?
Describe one stressful situation that occurred today.
Write only the facts.
Avoid explanations or opinions.
Situation:

What Was My First Thought?
Write the very first thought that entered your mind.
Do not edit it.
Do not judge it.
Simply record it.

What Story Did My Mind Begin Creating?
Did your mind immediately begin adding information that was not actually known?
Examples:
"They must be angry with me."
"I am going to fail."
"This always happens."
"I'll never recover."

Separate Facts from Stories
Draw two columns.

What am I assuming?

Identify the Invisible Stress Amplifier
Which thinking habit is operating?

If most answers are "No",
the thought may not be productive.

Replace the Thought
Complete the sentence.
Instead of thinking:

Thoughts become emotions.
Emotions influence decisions.
Decisions determine actions.
Actions shape our lives.
If we wish to reduce unnecessary stress,
we must first learn to observe the conversations taking place inside our own minds.
That is where lasting stress prevention begins.
Daily Reminder
Before reacting to any stressful situation, pause and ask yourself:
"Am I reacting to the facts... or to the story my mind has created?"
