INVITE STRESS
Edition 6
Why Is Stress Necessary?
Nature Did Not Create Stress to Harm Us. It Created Stress to Prepare Us.
One of the questions I am asked most often is,
"If stress causes so many problems, why do we have it at all?"
It is an important question.
After all, if stress were unnecessary, evolution would probably have eliminated it long ago.
Instead, every healthy human being is born with the ability to experience stress.
Why?
Because stress is not a mistake.
Stress is one of nature's most remarkable survival mechanisms.
Its purpose is not to make life miserable.
Its purpose is to prepare us for life.
Imagine a World Without Stress
Imagine waking up tomorrow completely incapable of experiencing stress.
You feel no urgency.
No concern.
No alertness.
No pressure.
Your child runs towards a busy road.
You remain calm.
A fire alarm sounds.
You continue reading your newspaper.
An examination begins in ten minutes.
You decide to arrive whenever you feel like it.
Would such a life be peaceful?
Or would it be dangerous?
Without stress, many of the actions necessary for survival would never happen.
Stress exists because life requires preparation.
Stress Is Nature's Alarm System
Consider your home.
You install a smoke detector.
Not because you enjoy hearing alarms.
But because you value early warning.
The alarm is not the problem.
Ignoring the fire is the problem.
Stress works in much the same way.
It alerts us that something deserves our attention.
Sometimes that "something" is physical danger.
Sometimes it is an approaching deadline.
Sometimes it is a difficult decision.
Sometimes it is an opportunity we do not wish to lose.
Stress says,
"Pay attention. Something important is happening."
Stress Prepares the Whole Person
Many people think stress affects only the body.
In reality, stress prepares the entire individual.
It prepares us to think.
To decide.
To act.
To adapt.
To protect.
To learn.
To perform.
Stress is not simply about survival.
It is about readiness.
Every Important Achievement Contains Stress
Think about the experiences that shape our lives.
Learning to walk.
Starting school.
Taking examinations.
Beginning a career.
Getting married.
Becoming a parent.
Leading a team.
Building a business.
Learning a new skill.
Every one of these experiences brings stress.
If stress disappeared, would achievement become easier?
Or would achievement disappear with it?
Perhaps stress is the entrance fee for growth.
Capability Grows Under Challenge
A muscle becomes stronger because it works against resistance.
A mind becomes wiser because it solves problems.
A leader becomes confident because difficult decisions must be made.
A student becomes knowledgeable because learning requires effort.
Challenge develops capability.
Stress accompanies challenge.
Without challenge, capability remains undeveloped.
The Real Purpose of Stress
Many people think the purpose of stress is to make us uncomfortable.
I believe discomfort is only a signal.
The real purpose of stress is to increase our readiness.
Stress says,
"Prepare."
"Learn."
"Adapt."
"Respond."
It is less interested in how comfortable we feel than in how capable we become.
When Stress Becomes a Problem
If stress is necessary, why do so many people suffer because of it?
Because the problem is often not the presence of stress.
The problem is what happens after stress appears.
Sometimes we misunderstand it.
Sometimes we resist it.
Sometimes we avoid it.
Sometimes we worry instead of acting.
Sometimes we remain under stress for so long that recovery becomes difficult.
Stress is doing its job.
We may not be doing ours.
A Different Way to Look at Stress
Instead of asking,
"How can I eliminate stress?"
Perhaps we should ask,
"What is this stress preparing me to do?"
That question changes everything.
It shifts our attention away from discomfort and towards purpose.
Every stressful experience becomes an opportunity to understand ourselves a little better.
The INVITE STRESS Principle
Stress is not the enemy of human capability.
Very often, it is the beginning of it.
Every important ability we develop is accompanied by challenge.
Every challenge awakens stress.
Every stressful experience invites us to learn, adapt, and grow.
Perhaps that is why stress has remained part of human life throughout history.
Not because nature wanted us to suffer.
But because nature wanted us to survive, and eventually, to flourish.
Final Thought
The next time stress appears, do not ask,
"Why is this happening to me?"
Ask instead,
"What is this preparing me for?"
The answer may reveal that stress has been working in your favor all along.
Until next time,
