SUPRA INTERACTIVE WORKSTATION No. 10
- The Desire Authenticity Filter (Steps 1–5): Isolates the desire, audits the root motivation, and checks if social media, comparison, or external pressure planted the desire (including the "Would I still want this if nobody else knew?" test).
- Stress ROI & Cost Calculator (Steps 6–7): Weighs the multidimensional costs (time, health, money, freedom) against the required stress to evaluate if the ROI is truly worth it.

Do I Really Need What I Think I Want?

THE SUPRA WORKSHEET No. 10
Do I Really Need What I Think I Want?
"Is This Want Worth the Stress It Will Require?"
Time Required: 20–25 Minutes
Purpose
Wanting something is not wrong.
Wants can motivate us to learn, work, achieve, create, and improve.
The problem begins when we mistake a want for a need.
When something we merely want begins to feel essential, not having it can create unnecessary stress.
This worksheet will help you examine one important want and decide whether it is:
- something you genuinely need,
- something you genuinely value,
- something you would simply enjoy having,
- or something you have been persuaded to want.
STEP 1
What Do I Want?
Choose one thing you currently want.
It could be:
- a possession,
- more money,
- a promotion,
- recognition,
- a relationship,
- a lifestyle,
- an achievement,
- a particular experience,
- or anything else.
I want:
STEP 2
Why Do I Want It?

Now ask yourself:

□ Recognition
□ Status
□ Independence
□ Pleasure
□ Convenience

□ Comparison with others
□ Something else
STEP 3
Do I Actually Need It?
Ask yourself:
"What will happen if I do not get it?"
Now complete:
If I never get this, my life will
□ Be seriously affected
□ Become somewhat more difficult
□ Remain largely the same
□ Probably be perfectly fine
Why?
STEP 4
What Problem Will It Solve?
Be specific.
The problem I believe this will solve is:
Now ask:
"Does this problem actually exist, or have I created it because I want something?"
My answer:
STEP 5
Who Put This Want Into My Mind?
Consider where this want came from.
□ I genuinely chose it myself
□ Family
□ Friends
□ Colleagues
□ Advertising
□ Social media
□ Comparison
□ Society
□ Professional competition
□ Fear of missing out
□ Other
Ask yourself:
"Would I still want this if nobody else knew that I had it?"
□ Yes
□ No
□ I'm not sure
Why?
STEP 6
What Will It Cost Me?
A want may cost much more than money.
Money
Time
Energy
Attention
Relationships
Health or well-being
Freedom or flexibility
STEP 7
What Stress Will I Have to Invite?
Every worthwhile achievement requires some effort and stress.
What stress will pursuing this want create?
□ Learning
□ Hard work
□ Financial pressure
□ Time pressure

□ I'm not sure
Why?
STEP 8

Imagine that you have obtained exactly what you want.
Complete the following:
I expect to feel:
The benefit I expect is:
How long do I think the satisfaction will last?
What might I want immediately afterward?
STEP 9
Need, Value, or Want?
Now make your decision.
I believe this is:
□ A genuine need
□ Something genuinely valuable to me
□ A useful but non-essential want
□ A temporary want
□ A want created mainly by comparison or social pressure
□ Something I no longer need to pursue
STEP 10
My Decision
Choose one.
I will pursue it
Because:
I will postpone it
Until:
I will modify my goal
Instead of:
I will:
I will let it go
Because:
STEP 11
What Could I Gain by Not Pursuing It?
Sometimes giving up a want creates its own benefits.
If I decide not to pursue this want, I may gain:
□ Money
□ Time
□ Energy
□ Freedom
□ Better relationships
□ Better health
□ Less pressure
□ Greater focus
□ Other
STEP 12
My Personal Rule
Complete this statement:
"Before I pursue something I strongly want, I will first ask..."
FINAL REFLECTION
Look at everything you have written.
Now answer one final question:
Is this want worth the stress required to obtain it?
□ Definitely yes
□ Probably yes
□ I'm not sure
□ Probably no
□ Definitely no
Explain your answer:
THE SUPRA PRINCIPLE
A want is not a need simply because we want it strongly.
Wanting can motivate us.
But when a want becomes a psychological necessity, it can also become a source of unnecessary stress.
The objective is not to stop wanting.
The objective is to choose our wants wisely.
YOUR REMINDER
Before pursuing your next strong desire, pause and ask:
"Do I really need what I think I want?"
And then ask:
"Is this want worth the stress it will require?"
Sometimes the wisest decision is to work harder to obtain what we truly value.
Sometimes it is to discover that we never needed it in the first place.
