Secret 34/59: Break Information into Chunks
Do not store everything in one place inside your brain.
If you dump everything together, retrieval becomes difficult.
The Basic Problem
Imagine a large building:
- Many
rooms
- Many
departments
- Many
people
- Many
items
If everything is thrown into one hall, can you find what you want
quickly?
No.
But if things are organized category-wise, you can access them easily.
That is exactly how your brain should function.
Think of a Provision Store
When you go to a supermarket:
- Soap
is in one section.
- Rice
is in another.
- Different
brands are arranged separately.
- Categories
are clearly defined.
Because of that organization, you can find what you want immediately.
But imagine if:
- Rice,
- Soap,
- Biscuits,
- Oil,
were all mixed together in one pile.
You would struggle to find anything.
That is what most students do inside their brains.
Before Storing, Think of
Access
When you save a file on a computer:
- You
create a folder.
- You
name it.
- You
decide where to save it.
You don’t just throw everything randomly into “My Computer.”
Why?
Because you think about how you will access it later.
In studying, we rarely think about access.
We only think about storing.
That is the mistake.
Control Placement
We must control how we place information in the brain.
If you:
- Organize
by subject,
- Organize
by chapter,
- Organize
by concept category,
Then retrieval becomes automatic.
If you mix everything, access becomes slow.
Examination time is not the time to search.
It is time to retrieve quickly.
Example
Suppose you are studying Biology:
Instead of mixing everything:
Create chunks like:
- Cell
Structure
- Cell
Functions
- Cell
Division
- Diseases
Within each, create smaller chunks.
Small, clear, organized units.
The brain remembers better when information is grouped meaningfully.
Why Chunking Works
The brain cannot efficiently process large amounts of unstructured
information.
But when broken into meaningful groups:
- Cognitive
load reduces.
- Retrieval
speed increases.
- Confidence
improves.
Chunking is not just breaking randomly.
It is organized intelligently.
Final Message
Before recording information in your brain, ask:
“How will I access this later?”
Place it properly.
Group it properly.
Chunk it properly.
Then memory will serve you when needed.
That is Secret 34
