Secret 49/59: Why Practice Is Different from Repetition | Smart Study Method
Many students believe that repeating something again and again means
practicing.
This is not true.
Repetition means doing the same thing in the same way.
Practice means doing it again with improvement.
If nothing changes, it is not practice.
It is only repetition.
The Problem with Repetition
Suppose you read a page in a textbook.
You finish reading but you do not understand anything.
Most students respond by reading the same page again in the same way.
The result?
Nothing changes.
Because the method has not changed.
The Essence of Practice
Practice means changing something in the next attempt.
Ask yourself:
Why did I not understand?
Then change the way you approach it.
For example:
First reading → understand nothing
Second reading → aim to identify at least one concept
Even if you understand just one concept, progress has started.
If you understand two concepts, it is even better.
But the important thing is:
The goal has changed.
Practice Always Includes
Improvement
Each trial must include a change.
You may change:
- Your
goal
- Your
strategy
- Your
focus
- Your
method
Without change, learning does not progress.
A Simple Rule
Repetition → Same action, same result
Practice → Improved action, improved result
Example
A student solving a math problem repeatedly in the same incorrect way is
repeating.
A student analyzing the mistake and trying a new method is practicing.
Only the second student improves.
Final Message
Do not repeat.
Practice.
Every new attempt must include a change and an improvement.
